Eagles host Rangers, Pumas this weekend

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team returns to the USI Softball Field this weekend when it hosts the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Saturday and Saint Joseph's College Sunday. Both Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheaders are slated to begin at noon.

USI (13-15, 4-8 GLVC) is trying to get some positive momentum going after a tough 10-game stretch that has seen the Screaming Eagles go 2-8.

The Eagles broke a five-game losing streak with their 5-3 victory in the second game of their doubleheader with No. 15 University of Indianapolis this past Saturday. USI, however, suffered a pair of 5-1 setbacks Sunday to Northern Kentucky University to conclude its four-game road trip with a 1-3 mark.

USI enters Saturday's game in unfamiliar territory as it is still in search of its first home win of the season. The Eagles are 0-4 at the USI Softball Field after suffering GLVC losses to the University of Missouri-St. Louis and Bellarmine University.

A bright spot for USI, however, has been the fact that it has played teams that are at or near the top of the GLVC in the early going. Northern Kentucky and Bellarmine sit atop the conference standings while Missouri-St. Louis is fourth.

With the Eagles sitting in 10th-place in the conference standings and a GLVC Tournament that takes eight teams looming in the future, this weekend's contests are critical games for the Eagles.

UW-Parkside (9-17, 5-3 GLVC), which split a doubleheader with USI last season in Somers, Wisconsin, is currently sixth in the conference after winning three of its last four games.

Saint Joseph's (12-13, 5-7 GLVC), which visits Lewis University today and Kentucky Wesleyan College Saturday, is currently eighth in the league standings despite losing its last four contests. The Eagles also split a doubleheader with Saint Joseph's last season in Rensselaer, Indiana.

Senior first baseman Brittany DeWeese leads the Eagles with a .416 batting average and is second on the squad with 21 RBIs, while sophomore pitcher/infielder Stephanie Bittner is hitting .368 with a team-best six home runs and 23 RBIs. DeWeese also is riding a season-best seven-game hitting streak.

USI also has been getting strong production from senior second baseman Amanda Brendel, who is hitting .355 with four home runs and 13 RBIs, and sophomore outfielder Katherine Belsito, who is hitting .471 with four RBIs during her current six-game hitting streak.
