Game 2
INDIANAPOLIS—Freshman pitcher
Madeline Brink had five strikeouts while allowing just three hits and three runs as the University of Southern Indiana softball team defeated No. 13 University of Indianapolis, 5-3, in the second game of a Great Lakes doubleheader Saturday. USI lost the opening game, 8-0, in six innings.
The Screaming Eagles (13-13, 4-6 GLVC), who snapped a five-game skid with the game-two victory, jumped out to a 2-0 lead when sophomore outfielder
Katherine Belsito hit a two-run double into the right-centerfield gap in the top of the fourth inning.
USI extended its advantage to 5-1 in the next inning as the Eagles got RBI-singles from senior second baseman
Amanda Brendel and junior third baseman Kristen O'Haver en route to a three-run inning.
Indianapolis (21-8-1, 5-5-0 GLVC), which capitalized on an error to score its first run in the fourth inning, got a two-run home run from catcher Cori Eckerle in the sixth inning to cut the Eagles' advantage in half heading into the final inning.
Brink (6-5), however, got the Greyhounds to go down in order in the seventh as she earned the complete-game victory. Just two of the runs Brink gave up were earned.
Earlier in the day, the Greyhounds took advantage of a pair of USI errors to score two runs in the bottom of the second inning and take a 2-0 lead. USI surrendered three more runs in the third inning and another in the fourth frame before Indianapolis ended the contest in the sixth via the eight-run rule with two more tallies.
Indianapolis tagged USI pitchers for 13 hits in the contest, while USI was held to just four hits. Senior first baseman
Brittany DeWeese led the Eagles by going 2-of-3 at the plate with a double, while sophomore pitcher/infielder
Stephanie Bittner was charged with the loss in the pitcher's circle. Bittner (3-6) gave up two unearned runs off two hits and a walk in 1 2/3 innings of work.
USI concludes its four-game road trip Sunday when it visits Northern Kentucky University for a GLVC doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 11 a.m. (CDT) in Highland Heights, Kentucky. Live stats and audio can be accessed at gousieagles.com.
