Eagles cut down Lady Oaks for sixth straight win

Oakland City (15-14): 2, 1
Box Scores: Game 1 | Game 2 (5 innings)

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—University of Southern Indiana senior shortstop Dani Finkelstein and sophomore designated player Stephanie Bittner combined for 10 hits and 12 RBIs Wednesday night as the Screaming Eagles swept a softball doubleheader from visiting Oakland City University at the USI Softball Field.

The Eagles (19-15), who have won six straight games, had 14 hits in the first game as they started the evening with a 9-2 victory. USI used a seven-run second inning and a four-run fourth inning as it took the nightcap, 14-1, in five innings.

In game one, the Eagles scored three times in the bottom of the second inning to take a three-run lead as senior second baseman and reigning Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week Amanda Brendel (Salem, Illinois) followed Finkelstein's RBI-single with a two-run single.

The Eagles tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning on a two-run home run by senior first baseman Brittany DeWeese to build a 5-1 cushion. Bittner had an RBI-single in the fifth inning to stake the Eagles to a 6-1 lead before DeWeese followed later in the inning with a bases-loaded walk.

After the Lady Oaks (15-14) tacked on another tally in the top half of the sixth inning, freshman catcher Lauren Hatfield had a pinch-hit, two-run double in the bottom half the frame to put the Eagles up 9-2 and give freshman hurler Madeline Brink more than enough wiggle room to secure her ninth win of the season.

Brink (9-7) scattered eight hits throughout seven innings, giving up just two runs, one earned, to pick up the complete-game victory.

After an error in the bottom of the first inning of game two led to USI's first run, Oakland City answered with three hits and a run in the top half of the second frame to tie the contest.

That was as close as the Lady Oaks would get, however, as the Eagles sent 11 batters to the plate en route to their seven-run second inning and a commanding 8-1 advantage.

Junior third baseman Kristen O'Haver led the inning off with a triple and had a run-scoring double later in the frame. After the Eagles loaded the bases, Bittner, who went 2-for-2 with five RBIs in the second game, was hit by a pitch for the second straight inning to score the first run of the frame.

Finkelstein, who was 3-for-3 with five RBIs in game two, followed Bittner with a grand slam to put USI up 6-1. USI scored two more time as sophomore outfielder Katherine Belsito had an RBI groundout prior to O'Haver's RBI-double.

Bittner and Finkelstein each had RBI hits in the third inning, while Bittner hit a three-run home run to cap off the Eagles' four-run fourth inning. Senior outfielder Reva LeDune-Bourgasser also had an RBI-double in the fourth inning.

Freshman pitcher Kelsey Jankowski was the benefactor of the Eagles' offensive explosion. Jankowski (7-2) gave up one run off six hits in four innings to earn the victory.

USI returns to GLVC play Saturday at noon when it visits the University of Illinois Springfield for a doubleheader. The Eagles end their four-game road trip Sunday at noon when they travel to Romeoville, Illinois, to take on No. 21 and GLVC-leader Lewis University.
