KISSIMMEE, Fla.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team got a three-hit shutout effort out of freshman pitcher
Kelsey Jankowski and a five-RBI performance from sophomore pitcher/infielder
Stephanie Bittner to post a 3-0 win over the University of Sciences in Philadelphia and a 7-2 victory over Midwest Region foe Lake Erie College Monday at the Division II Rebel Spring Games.
Jankowski's (3-1) three-hitter was the Screaming Eagles' first shutout of the season and their first win in a regulation seven-inning game—three of USI's first six wins were via the eight-run rule, while the other three came in extra innings.
USI (8-6) capitalized on an error in the bottom of the first inning to score the first run; then got RBI-doubles from senior first baseman
Brittany DeWeese and senior outfielder
Reva LeDune-Bourgasser in the sixth frame to build its 3-run cushion.
Against Lake Erie, Bittner had a two-run single in the top of the second inning as the Eagles sent nine runners to the plate and scored four times. Bittner, who was 2-of-4 at the plate, hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning to give USI a 7-0 advantage.
Freshman pitcher
Madeline Brink earned her second straight win after giving up just four hits and no runs in six innings of work. Brink struck out four batters and did not issue a walk as she improved to 3-2 on the year.
The Eagles conclude the Rebel Spring Games Wednesday with games against Minnesota State University-Mankato (Noon CST) and Midwest Region foe Ashland University (4 p.m.). Live stats and audio can be accessed at
