Eagles try to end slide at UIndy, NKU

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team will attempt to end its four-game losing streak Saturday at 11 a.m. (CDT) when it visits No. 13 University of Indianapolis for a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader. The Screaming Eagles also travel to Highland Heights, Kentucky, for a GLVC doubleheader with Northern Kentucky University Sunday at 11 a.m.

USI (12-12, 3-5 GLVC) is coming off a pair of tough losses against Bellarmine University on Monday. The Eagles saw a 1-0 lead in game one turn into a 5-1 setback after the Knights scored five times in the seventh inning. The visiting Knights rallied from a 5-0 deficit in the sixth inning to take the second game, 9-8, in extra innings.

Senior second baseman Amanda Brendel led the Eagles against Bellarmine with two home runs and three RBIs. Brendel has hit safely in nine straight games and is hitting .500 with three home runs and six RBIs during that span.

For the season, the Eagles are led by sophomore pitcher/infielder Stephanie Bittner and senior first baseman Brittany DeWeese. Bittner is hitting .400 with six home runs and 23 RBIs, while DeWeese is hitting .397 with eight doubles and 21 RBIs.

In the pitching circle, the Eagles have shown promise despite the recent struggles. Freshman pitcher Madeline Brink surrendered just five hits throughout the first six innings of the first game against Bellarmine before the Knights got something started in the seventh inning.

Bittner (3-5) had allowed just two hits throughout the first five innings of game two against Bellarmine before giving up her first run of the contest.

For the season, Brink is 5-5 with a 3.71 ERA, while fellow classmate Kelsey Jankowski is 4-2 with a team-best 2.76 ERA.

Indianapolis (18-7-1, 4-4-0 GLVC) has won three straight games and five of its last six contests heading into its non-conference doubleheader with Maryville University today. The Greyhounds took 2-of-3 from the Eagles a year ago, splitting a doubleheader with USI during the regular season before defeating the Eagles 4-2 in the GLVC Tournament.

Northern Kentucky (16-9, 7-2 GLVC) has won 11 of its last 13 games heading into its GLVC doubleheader with Kentucky Wesleyan College Saturday in Highland Heights. The Norse swept the Eagles in the regular season last year and have won four straight in the series.
