ROLLA, Mo.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team rallied from a 5-3 deficit in the second game of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader to defeat host Missouri University of Science & Technology, 6-5, Sunday afternoon. The win gave the Screaming Eagles a split on the day after the Miners rallied for a 5-4 victory in eight innings in game one.

USI (12-8, 3-1 GLVC), which led 3-1 after three innings, found itself trailing 5-3 after the Miners scored four times in the bottom of the fourth frame. The Eagles, however, got an RBI-single off the bat of senior third baseman LeAnn Collins in the fifth frame to cut the deficit to one run heading into the final two innings.

Freshman pitcher Kelsey Jankowski, who came on in relief in the first and second games, held the Miners in check in the fifth and sixth innings to give the Eagles a chance in the seventh frame.

Trailing by a run in the seventh inning, USI got an RBI-double from senior first baseman Brittany DeWeese to tie the contest. Sophomore outfielder Katherine Belsito had an RBI-single two batters later to put the Eagles up 6-5.

Missouri S&T (3-13, 2-2 GLVC) loaded the bases in the bottom half of the inning, but freshman pitcher Madeline Brink came on to record the final out for the Eagles and pick up her first save of the season.

Jankowski (4-2) earned the game-two victory after blanking the Miners on six hits in three innings of work. She was charged with the loss in game one after giving up two unearned runs off three hits in 4 1/3 innings of work.

In game one, Missouri S&T took advantage of four USI errors as the Miners rallied from a 3-0 deficit to defeat the Eagles in extra frames.

USI jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when DeWeese hit a run-scoring double with one out. The Eagles took advantage of an error in the second inning to score two more times and forge a 3-0 advantage.

Missouri S&T had four straight hits to score twice in the third inning, then took advantage of two errors in the next inning to score two more times and take a 4-3 advantage.

USI tied the contest in the fifth inning when Collins doubled down the leftfield line. The Miners, however, scored on an error in the bottom of the eighth inning to end the contest and pick up the victory.

The Eagles return to action March 20 when they open their home schedule with a GLVC doubleheader against the University of Missouri-St. Louis. First pitch is slated for noon at the USI Softball Field.
