Choate throws a gem in 4-0 win

BOX SCORE

EVANSVILLE, Ind.  – University of Southern Indiana senior right-hander Tyler Choate (Carmi, Illinois) threw a gem and led the Screaming Eagles to a 4-0 win over St. Cloud State University in the final game of the Dunn Hospitality Tournament Sunday at the USI Baseball Field. USI wins its fifth straight game and rises to 8-5 overall, while SCSU goes to 10-2 in 2011.

Choate (3-0) went the distance in the victory, scattering four hits and allowing only two runners to reach third base. The complete game was Choate's first since elbow surgery last season.

A pitcher's duel for the first four-and-a-half innings, the Eagles broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Senior second baseman Ben Griggs (Evansville, Indiana) put USI on the scoreboard with a RBI-single, while junior third baseman Ryan Kaczmarski (Mishawaka, Indiana) singled in the second run of the inning to give the Eagles a 2-0 advantage.

Junior shortstop Brad Vance (Louisville, Kentucky) highlighted the inning with a two-run single to left that gave USI a 4-0 lead after five innings. The four runs would all the runs USI would need.

Senior first baseman Adam Enright (Hammond, Indiana) led the Eagles at the plate with three hits and run scored. Vance finished the game with a pair of hits and the two RBIs, while senior leftfielder Michael Huling (South Bend, Indiana) had two hits and a run scored.

USI opens the 2011 GLVC schedule next weekend when it visits Missouri University of Science and Technology March 19 and Drury University March 20 for noon doubleheaders. The Eagles are on the road for the next 11 games before returning to the friendly surrounding of the USI Baseball Field on April 5 to play Kentucky Wesleyan College.
