GREENEVILLE, Tenn.—Sophomore pitcher/infielder
Stephanie Bittner went a combined 5-for-7 at the plate with two home runs and six RBIs as the University of Southern Indiana softball team defeated West Virginia Wesleyan College, 8-7, in eight innings and Mount Olive College, 10-2, in six innings.
Bittner, who pitched both games, had a three-run home run in the top of the third inning against West Virginia Wesleyan and a two-run shot against the Bobcats in the sixth frame to stake the Screaming Eagles to a 7-2 lead.
West Virginia Wesleyan (4-1), which is receiving votes in the latest NFCA Top 25 poll, answered with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and another tally in the seventh to tie the contest at 7-7 and force extra frames.
Freshman outfielder
Teri Newmaster had an RBI-single in the eighth inning as the Eagles took advantage of the international tiebreaker rule to take an 8-7 lead. Freshman pitcher
Kelsey Jankowski, who relieved Bittner in the sixth inning, retired three straight batters in the bottom half of the eighth inning to preserve her first career collegiate victory.
The Eagles' (4-4) victory over Mount Olive was less dramatic as they used a pair of four-run innings to win via the eight-run rule.
Senior second baseman
Amanda Brendel was 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, a home run, and two RBIs to lead the Eagles. Brendel hit a two-run home run in the third inning to cap off the Eagles' first four-run frame and had an RBI-double in USI's second four-run inning.
Freshman shortstop
Alison Nord had a two-run single to give the Eagles a 3-1 advantage in the third inning, while senior first baseman
Brittany DeWeese had a pair of RBI-singles.
Bittner (2-1), who was 2-of-3 at the plate in the second game with a double, a triple, and two runs scored, picked up the win as she scattered seven hits throughout six innings while giving up just one earned run.
