DECATUR, Ala.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team closed its opening weekend with a 5-3 loss to Truman State University and a 3-2 setback to the University of West Georgia Sunday at the UAH Charger Chillout.
USI (2-4) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning against Truman State when senior first baseman
Brittany DeWeese hit a two-out, run-scoring single to right field. DeWeese had a two-out, two-run single in the third inning to put the Screaming Eagles in front, 3-2.
Truman State (2-3), which scored twice in the second inning on the strength of a one-out triple and two-out single, capitalized on a lead-off walk to tie the contest in the fourth inning. The Bulldogs took advantage of a passed ball and a two-out error to take a 5-3 lead in the fifth inning.
The Eagles had runners on second and third with one out in the top half of the fifth inning, but a strikeout and a pop-up ended USI's scoring threat.
Sophomore pitcher
Stephanie Bittner was charged with the loss after giving up five runs, three earned, off seven hits in six innings of work. She is 1-1 with the setback.
USI's two-out rally in the top of the seventh inning against West Georgia came up just short as the Eagles had the game-tying run on first base.
Senior second baseman
Amanda Brendel, who had a two-out single to begin the rally, scored when sophomore outfielder
Katherine Belsito doubled to centerfield. Belsito took advantage of a pair of errors on the play to score the Eagles' second run and cut the deficit to 3-2.
Senior outfielder
Heather Swarts, who started both games behind the plate, extended the rally with a single in the next at-bat, but a strikeout ended USI's rally and gave the Wolves the one-run victory.
West Georgia (7-2) took advantage of an error in the fourth inning to score the first run of the contest. The Wolves scored two more in the fifth inning when second baseman Lindsay Ellenburg hit a two-run triple into the left-centerfield gap.
Freshman pitcher
Madeline Brink took the loss for the Eagles after giving up three runs, two earned, off six hits in six innings of work. She falls to 1-2 with the decision.
The Eagles return to action next weekend when they travel to Greenville, Tennessee, to take part in the Tusculum Classic. USI plays West Virginia Wesleyan College and Mount Olive College Saturday at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. (CST), respectively.
