DECATUR, Ala.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team scored six times in the last half of the first inning of its season-opener Friday afternoon as it cruised to a 15-3 victory over Lambuth University in five innings at the UAH Charger Chillout.

The Screaming Eagles, who had 12 hits in their opener, were held hitless in their second game as the University of North Alabama defeated USI, 11-0, in five innings to conclude the first day of action.

Senior outfielder Heather Swarts led the Eagles as she went 2-for-3 at the plate with four RBIs, while senior third baseman LeAnn Collins had a three-run home run in the fourth inning of USI's win over Lambuth.

USI (1-1) had three hits and took advantage of four walks and an error in the first inning against Lambuth to take a 6-0 lead. The Eagles had a two-out rally to tack on another run in the second frame and answered a three-run fourth inning by Lambuth to plate eight runs in the bottom half of the fourth frame.

Sophomore Stephanie Bittner was awarded with the win in the first game after giving up just three hits in three innings of work.

In their second game against the Lions of North Alabama, the Eagles gave up three runs in the top of the third inning and three more in the fourth as they fell behind by six runs. North Alabama, which took advantage of three USI errors, capped off the five-inning victory by plating five runs in the fifth frame.

Freshman Madeline Brink was charged with the loss in her first collegiate start after giving up seven runs, four earned, off nine hits in 3 2/3 innings of work.

Offensively, the Eagles had just two runners reach base as North Alabama hurler Haley Barnette recorded the five-inning no-hitter.

USI returns to action Saturday when it takes on Ohio Dominican University at 12:30 p.m. and Georgia College & State University at 4:30 p.m.
