The Screaming Eagles, who finish the year with a 20-11 record, jumped out to a one-set advantage after racking up 16 kills and hitting .379 in the opener. LaGrange had seven of her 21 kills, two of her three blocks, and attacked at a .667 clip in the first frame as the Eagles used a late 3-0 spurt to build a 24-20 lead before settling for the three-point win.
Indianapolis (23-7), which advances to play Ferris State University in the semifinals, roared back in the second frame behind the effort of junior outside hitter Kristina Kerrigan, who finished the match with 26 kills and a blistering .537 attacking percentage. Kerrigan racked up six kills and hit .714 in the second stanza as the Greyhounds, who used a 10-3 run to break an early 10-10 tie, earned an eight-point win in the second game to tie the contest at a set apiece.
USI seized momentum early in the third set as it used a 4-0 spurt to forge an 11-7 lead. The turning point of the match, however, came in the next 11 rallies as the Greyhounds, behind six Kerrigan kills, reeled off 11 consecutive points to turn momentum into their favor and build an 18-11 advantage.
The Eagles did not go down quietly in the third game as they used a 9-3 burst to get back to within a point at 21-20. Indianapolis, though, got one of the 20 kills that came from the swing of senior outside hitter Kristina Hefferan as well as a block to extend its advantage to 23-20; then got a pair of kills from senior middle hitter Courtney Anglemyer to pick up the four-point win and a 2-1 lead in the match.
After watching Indianapolis grab a 19-13 advantage in the fourth set, the Eagles bounced back with an 8-2 run to tie the frame at 21-21.
With the score tied 22-22, Indianapolis sandwiched kills by Hefferan and Anglemyer around a USI attacking error to win the next three points and end the match in four sets.
