EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team slipped up for just the second time at home this season as it suffered a 25-22, 25-21, 25-23 Great Lakes Valley Conference loss to No. 20 Lewis University Saturday afternoon at the Physical Activities Center.
USI (18-8, 13-3 GLVC) struggled early in the match as it trailed by as many as six points in the opening set. The Screaming Eagles rallied to get to within a point on three separate occasions in the first frame, but a 4-0 Lewis run late in the set proved to be too much to overcome as the Flyers claimed the three-point win and a 1-0 lead in the match.
The two teams battled back-and-forth through much of the second stanza, but a 5-1 spurt put the Eagles into a 21-17 deficit. USI, which committed nine attacking errors in the second set and 24 for the match, got back to within two points on a pair of occasions, but the Flyers picked up the final two points to win the game and take a two-set lead into the intermission.
USI, which rallied from a two-set deficit to defeat the Flyers in Romeoville, Illinois, in September, found itself in a four-point deficit midway through the third game. The Eagles, however, chiseled away at the Flyers' advantage to tie the frame at 22-22.
After a furious rally that saw both teams make outstanding plays to keep the ball alive, the Flyers came up with a momentum-changing block by Jen Krumwiede and Danielle Mount to break a 23-23 stalemate. The Flyers benefited on a ball-handling error by USI sophomore middle blocker
Emily Diedrich in the ensuing rally to seal the two-point win and the three-set victory.
Senior middle blocker
Danielle LaGrange led the Eagles with 10 kills and 16 digs, while Diedrich added five kills and a team-high three blocks. Freshmen outside hitters
Fawn Ryan and
Lauren DeShaney each had nine kills, while sophomore setter
Jorae Bradbury finished with 33 assists.
Sophomore libero
Kayla Heldman and senior defensive specialist
Krista Coccaro contributed 17 and eight digs, respectively, for the Eagles, who suffered just their third loss in the last 14 matches.
USI, which saw its nine-match winning streak in the GLVC end with Saturday's loss, concludes its regular-season home schedule Tuesday at 7 p.m. when it hosts Midwest Region foe Urbana University at the PAC. The Eagles finish the regular season next weekend when they visit No. 13 Northern Kentucky University Friday in Highland Heights, Kentucky, and Bellarmine University Saturday in Louisville, Kentucky.
