Eagles’ attack drops Rangers in four

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team hammered down 56 kills and racked up a blistering .325 attacking percentage in a 25-19, 20-25, 25-15, 25-19 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Friday night at the Physical Activities Center.

USI (18-7, 13-2 GLVC) posted attacking percentages of .469 and .480 in the first and third sets, respectively, as it jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the match. The Screaming Eagles built a 10-point lead late in the opening frame before settling for the six-point win and a 1-0 lead in the match.

Sophomore setter Jorae Bradbury had 16 of her match-high 45 assists in the opening frame as the Eagles took command of the match. Bradbury also had 10 digs and a service ace in the win.

UW-Parkside (13-14, 9-6 GLVC), which hit .314 in the first stanza, battled back in the second frame as it posted a .296 attacking percentage, while holding USI to a .152 clip. The Rangers used an 8-1 run to overcome a late three-point deficit in the second game and even the match at a set apiece.

Following the intermission, the Eagles exploded for 13 kills and a .800 side-out percentage in the third game to reclaim momentum in the match. USI jumped out to an early 8-2 lead in the third stanza and never looked back as it claimed the 10-point win and a one-set advantage.

The Eagles, who defeated UW-Parkside in five sets earlier this season, overcame an early 9-5 deficit to grab the victory in the fourth game. After using a 5-1 spurt to tie the set, the Eagles went on a 7-2 run later in the frame to forge a commanding 21-16 lead. USI traded points with the visiting Rangers throughout the final seven rallies as it clinched the four-set victory and the regular-season sweep.

Senior middle blocker Danielle LaGrange, the reigning Sports Imports/AVCA Division II National Player of the Week, led the Eagles with a match-high 16 kills, 11 digs, and six blocks. LaGrange, who has earned GLVC Player of the Week honors twice in 2011, also had a pair of aces and a blistering .600 attacking percentage as the Eagles reached the 18-win plateau for the fourth straight year.

Freshman outside hitter Lauren DeShaney, who played against two of her high school teammates Friday night, finished with 15 kills and five digs, while sophomore middle blocker Emily Diedrich finished with eight kills and a .375 attacking percentage.

The Eagles also got solid offensive efforts from freshman outside hitter Fawn Ryan, who added eight kills and a .333 attacking percentage, and junior right side hitter Emily Meyer, who chipped in six kills, a .333 attacking percentage, and five blocks.

Sophomore libero Kayla Heldman contributed 10 digs for the Eagles, who have won 11 of their last 13 matches and nine straight conference contests.

USI returns to action Saturday at 3 p.m. when it hosts No. 20 Lewis University for Senior Day. The Eagles will honor LaGrange and senior defensive specialist Krista Coccaro prior to the match.
