Eagles soar over Panthers, 5-1

USI to play UW-Parkside in GLVC Tournament

EVANSVILLE. Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team secured the sixth seed in the upcoming GLVC Tournament with a 5-1 victory over Kentucky Wesleyan College Wednesday evening at Strassweg Field. USI rises to 9-7-2 overall and 9-5-1 in the GLVC, while KWC dropped to 1-13-1, 1-13-1 GLVC.
 
The Screaming Eagles will play the third-seeded University of Wisconsin-Parkside in the first round of the GLVC Tournament Sunday at noon in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The Rangers clinched the third seed in the tournament with a 3-2 overtime win at Lewis University.
 
The Eagles and the Rangers tied the first time around in 2011, playing to a 0-0 in double-overtime draw October 9 in Kenosha.
 
The Eagles soared over the Panthers in the 5-1 regular season finale and were led by senior forward Meagan Kempf (Evansville, Indiana), who had pair of goals and tied a USI single-game record with three assists. Kempf's three assists tied the record held by Kristi Butler and Stephanie Minor, who accomplished the feat three times during her career.
 
USI led 3-0 at halftime on goals by Kempf, junior forward Susan Ellsperman (Newburgh, Indiana), and freshman forward Makenzie Brinker (Evansville, Indiana). The goals by Ellsperman and Brinker were generated by Kempf, while Brinker assisted on Kempf's first half tally.
 
In the second stanza, Kempf set up junior midfielder Paige Nuelle (St. Louis, Missouri) for the Eagles' fourth goal on a corner kick 52 seconds after the intermission. Kempf finished the USI scoring at 52:38 off a pass from Ellsperman.
 
Between the posts, senior goalkeeper Stephanie Bodamer (Highland, Indiana) and sophomore Lvyn Bertram (Hazleton,Indiana) preserved the victory for the Eagles. Bodamer had a pair of first half saves, while Bertram made five saves in the final 45 minutes.
