EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team rallied from a one-set deficit to upset No. 21 University of Indianapolis, 22-25, 25-19, 26-24, 25-20, Saturday afternoon in a Great Lakes Valley Conference bout at the Physical Activities Center.
After watching the Greyhounds (15-6, 11-2 GLVC) use a 3-0 run to end the opening set and build a 1-0 lead in the match, the Screaming Eagles battled back in the second set as they used an 8-1 run midway through the stanza before settling on a six-point victory.
The Eagles (16-7, 11-2 GLVC) led 24-20 in the third frame, but a 4-0 UIndy surge forced a tie and swung momentum back into the Greyhounds favor. USI, however, got a big kill from senior middle blocker
Danielle LaGrange and benefitted from a setting error by UIndy setter Meghan Binkerd to score the next two points and claim the third-set win.
USI, which clinched a spot in the GLVC Tournament, trailed by three at several junctures in the third game, but a 6-1 run midway through the stanza allowed the Eagles to take a 19-17 lead.
In the fourth set, the Eagles found themselves facing an early four-point deficit, but a 5-0 run that ended with a block by sophomore middle blocker
Emily Diedrich allowed USI to pull into a brief 9-8 lead.
USI, which dominated the nets as it out-blocked UIndy, 11-1, broke a 12-12 tie as it went on a 7-0 run to take command of the fourth frame. The Greyhounds chiseled away at the Eagles' lead, eventually cutting it to four points, but a kill by freshman outside hitter
Lauren DeShaney ended the comeback attempt and gave the Eagles their first win over UIndy since 2005.
LaGrange led the Eagles with 16 kills and a match-high eight blocks, while DeShaney and freshman outside hitter
Fawn Ryan finished with 13 and 10 kills, respectively. Diedrich added eight kills and a .353 attacking percentage, while sophomore setter
Jorae Bradbury added five kills, a .667 attacking percentage, 41 assists, eight digs, and three blocks.
Senior defensive specialist
Krista Coccaro chipped in 10 digs for the Eagles, who held UIndy to a .209 attacking percentage.
USI, which attacked at a .247 clip, returns to action Tuesday at 7 p.m. when it takes on Kentucky Wesleyan College at the PAC.
