Dugger posts hat trick plus one in USI win

Eagles rush past Stars, 11-0

BOX SCORE

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana sophomore forward Rush Dugger (Hanson, Kentucky) scored four times and led the Screaming Eagles to an 11-0 victory over the University of Illinois Springfield Friday night at Strassweg Field. USI rises to 4-10-1 overall and 3-9-1 in the GLVC, while Illinois Springfield falls to 0-12-2, 0-11-2 GLVC.

Dugger led a USI offensive explosion that featured eight different goal scorers. He scored a pair of goals in each half and was one tally shy of tying Michael Corday's single-game record of five versus Saint Joseph's College in 1986.

Joining Dugger in the first half's scoring column was junior midfielder Jeffrey McClure (Indianapolis, Indiana), who also had a USI single-game record five assists in the match; sophomore defender Austin Lage (Valley Park, Missouri), who posted his first collegiate goal; junior midfielder Austin Andrekus (St. Charles, Missouri); and freshman defender James Kennedy (Waterford, Michigan).

McClure broke the assist record that was set by Chris King against the University of Indianapolis in 1989.

In the second half, sophomore midfielder Josh Higgins (Haubstadt, Indiana) started the scoring with his first collegiate goal before Dugger got his third tally of the contest. Freshman forward Miles Durham (Madisonville, Kentucky) picked his second goal of the year and USI's ninth of the contest, while junior midfielder Ryan Moll (Evansville, Indiana) notched his first goal as an Eagle before Dugger finished the scoring with his fourth of the match.

The 11 goals are the most by an Eagle team since 2002 when USI posted a 12 spot on Kentucky Wesleyan College. The USI school record for goals in a game was set in 1982 when the Eagles found the back of the net 14 times against UIndy.

Between the posts, junior goalkeeper Ben Dempsey (Evansville, Indiana) picked up the win and recorded his fourth shutout of the year. Dempsey was forced to make four saves in the match.

The Eagles reach the midway point of the three-game homestand at 2:30 p.m. Sunday when they host Quincy University. The Hawks rose to 9-5-1 overall and 8-4-1 in the GLVC with a 7-0 victory at Kentucky Wesleyan College this afternoon.
