AURORA, Ill.—Despite a solid performance, the University of Southern Indiana volleyball team lost a tough 25-21, 25-17, 25-18 decision to No. 8 Hillsdale College to conclude the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge Saturday afternoon.
The Screaming Eagles (13-7), who hit .306 in the opening stanza, had an early 11-7 lead in the opening set. The Chargers, though, used a 4-0 spurt to tie the game and steal USI's momentum.
After the two-teams battled back-and-forth throughout the next 17 rallies, the Chargers won four of the next five points to build a 23-19 advantage.
Hillsdale (17-2), which defeated USI at the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover and the NCAA II Midwest Region Tournament last season, hit .455 in the second set and used a runs of 6-1 and 7-1 to grab the win in game two and extend its lead in the match to 2-0.
USI trailed 16-13 midway through the third stanza, but a 7-0 run by the Chargers, who hit .464 in the final frame and .404 in the match, put the set out of reach for the Eagles.
Senior middle blocker
Danielle LaGrange led the Eagles with 14 kills, three blocks, and a .429 attacking percentage. Sophomore setter
Jorae Bradbury had 32 assists, while sophomore libero
Kayla Heldman chipped in 11 digs.
LaGrange, who finished the weekend with a combined 53 kills and a .407 attacking percentage, is just 21 kills shy of her 1,000th kill in a USI uniform.
USI returns to action Tuesday at 7 p.m. when the Eagles host future Great Lakes Valley Conference member McKendree University at the Physical Activities Center. Tuesday's contest begins a seven-match homestand for the Eagles.
