PENSACOLA, Fla.—The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team rebounded from a season-opening setback to trounce Wilmington University (Delaware) in straight sets Friday afternoon in the first day of the University of West Florida Comfort Inn-vitational.
USI (1-1) attacked at a .560 clip in the opening set to pick up a 25-12 victory before edging the Wildcats (0-2) 25-21 in the second set. The Screaming Eagles hit .385 and had a .750 side out percentage to take the third set, 25-11, and complete the three-game sweep.
Earlier in the day, the Eagles jumped out to a one-set lead by taking the opening frame, 25-21, against host West Florida. However, the Argonauts (1-0) rallied for wins in the second (25-17), third (25-14), and fourth frames (25-15) to deny the Eagles a season-opening victory.
Senior outside hitter
Brittani Oliver had 16 kills and a .351 attacking percentage to lead the Eagles against West Florida. She concluded the day with nine kills and a .429 attacking clip in the victory over Wilmington.
Junior middle blocker
Danielle LaGrange had 11 kills and a .381 attacking percentage in the victory over Wilmington after racking up 14 kills and 10 digs in the loss to West Florida.
The Eagles, who hit a combined .222 on the day, got 36 assists from sophomore setter
Ashley King against West Florida and 29 assists from King against Wilmington.
King, who had 10 digs against West Florida, benefitted from a strong effort by sophomore outside hitter
Abbi Williams and freshman middle blocker
Emily Diedrich against Wilmington. Williams racked up nine kills and a .409 attacking percentage, while Diedrich had six kills and a .556 attacking percentage.
Junior libero
Krista Coccaro led the Eagles defensively. Coccaro finished with 20 digs against West Florida and 12 digs against Wilmington, while freshman defensive specialist
Kayla Heldman added 13 digs against West Florida.
USI, which found out Friday that its match with the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras was cancelled, concludes its opening weekend of action by taking on The University of Alabama-Huntsville Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
