EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team opens its 2010 home schedule when it hosts Kentucky State University Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Physical Activities Center.
Tuesday's contest is the first of three straight home matches for the Screaming Eagles, who enter the week with a 4-3 record. The Eagles also open Great Lakes Valley Conference play Friday at 7 p.m. when they host Northern Kentucky University. They host Bellarmine University Saturday at 3 p.m.
The Eagles are coming off a 3-1 victory over Harding University, a team that was receiving votes in last week's AVCA Top 25 coaches' poll. Junior middle blocker
Danielle LaGrange led the Eagles with 20 kills and a .359 attacking percentage in the Eagles' win over Harding.
LaGrange currently leads the Eagles with 3.85 kills per set and a .298 attacking percentage.
Senior outside hitter Brittany Oliver is second on the team with 2.85 kills per set and a .235 attacking percentage. Oliver is just nine kills away from becoming the 10th player in school history to reach 1,000 in her career.
Kentucky State, a former member of the GLVC, enters Tuesday's match with a 7-1 record. Tuesday's match marks the first meeting between USI and the Thorobreds in volleyball since 1994—the Eagles won the match in three sets.
Northern Kentucky (4-5, 0-0 GLVC) has won four of its last five matches after opening the season with four straight losses. The Norse defeated California University-Pennsylvania and Gannon University in their most recent matches.
USI suffered a 3-1 setback to Northern Kentucky in Highland Heights, Kentucky, a year ago and has lost five of the last six meetings to the Norse.
Bellarmine (3-4) has lost three straight after opening the year with a 3-1 mark. The Eagles recorded their 500th all-time win last season when they defeated the Knights in three sets in Louisville, Kentucky. USI has won the last 14 matches in the series, dating back to 1999.
