QUINCY, Ill.—Quincy University junior hurler Torie Bunzell held the University of Southern Indiana softball team without a hit in the first game of a GLVC doubleheader as the host Hawks nipped the Screaming Eagles, 2-0, Saturday afternoon. Game two was cancelled due to inclement weather.
USI (17-24, 13-12 GLVC) had the bases loaded with one out in the top of the seventh inning, but could not produce a run as Bunzell, who had 17 strikeouts, got back-to-back outs to keep the Hawks atop the GLVC standings.
Quincy (32-10, 17-4 GLVC) broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning to take a 1-0 lead when second baseman Monica Gray hit a solo home run over the centerfield fence. The Hawks took advantage of an error in the sixth inning to extend their advantage to 2-0.
Freshman pitcher Stephanie Bittner was charged with the loss after giving up two runs, one earned, off seven hits in six innings of work. Bittner, who had four strikeouts and just one walk, falls to 6-3 with the decision.
Despite the silent bats in game one, USI's offense came alive in the second game, only to see a 4-1 lead get washed away in the top of the fifth inning due to inclement weather.
Senior Sara Loete hit a grand slam off Bunzell, who started the second game, in the third frame to stake the Eagles to the 4-1 lead.
With two outs in the top portion of the fifth frame, and just three defensive outs away from an official game, Mother Nature struck a huge blow to the Eagles as thunderstorms rolled through the area to delay the contest and ultimately end USI's opportunity to gain a split on the day.
Due to the fact that the contest was unofficial, Loete's home run, which would have been her fourth of the season, and her four RBIs, will not count toward her season totals.
The Eagles, who are still in seventh place in the GLVC standings, conclude their regular season schedule Sunday when they visit Rockhurst University. First pitch is slated for noon in Kansas City, Missouri.
