EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Sophomore pitcher/infielder Kristen O'Haver helped lead the University of Southern Indiana softball team to a 7-2 victory in the second game of a doubleheader as the Screaming Eagles salvaged a split with the visiting Drury University Panthers Friday afternoon at the USI Softball Field. Drury took the opening game, 12-0.
O'Haver (1-0) went seven innings, giving up just two runs off four hits, to pick up her first collegiate victory in her first-ever start inside the pitching circle. The University of Kentucky transfer helped her squad at the plate by going 1-for-3 with three RBIs, including a two-run double in the fifth inning that sealed the victory for USI.
The Eagles (9-17, 8-6 GLVC) capitalized on a pair of Drury errors in the bottom half of the second inning to plate a run and take a 1-0 lead. Junior centerfielder Reva LeDune-Bourgasser hit her fourth home run of the season in the third inning, this a two-run shot over the rightfield fence, to increase the Eagles' advantage to 3-0.
A lead-off error in the fifth frame led to four more USI tallies as the Eagles built their advantage to 7-1. Junior third baseman LeAnn Collins had an RBI-single in the inning, while junior first baseman Brittany DeWeese hit a run-scoring double.
In game one, the Eagles' pitching staff gave up 15 hits and watched the Panthers score three times in the third inning, once in the fourth, twice in the sixth, and six times in the seventh frame. Sophomore Hadley Clark was charged with the loss after giving up seven runs, six earned, off 11 hits in 6.1 innings of work.
USI returns to action Tuesday at 5 p.m. when it hosts Brescia University in a doubleheader at the USI Softball Field.
