COLUMBUS, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana men's golf team shot 307 in the final round of the GLVC Championship Friday to finish fifth out of 14 teams with a three-round total of 904 at the Otter Creek Golf Course.
USI began the tournament by playing 36 holes Thursday, racking up its second-best 18-hole score of the season with an opening-round 294. The Screaming Eagles shot 303 in the second round Thursday afternoon as they found themselves in fourth place and just 10 strokes back of first-place heading into Friday's closing round.
Junior Matt Hancock tied for eighth overall to lead the Eagles. Hancock shot an even-par 72 in the second round after opening the tournament with a one-over 73 in the first round. He shot 78 in the third round to finish with a three-round score of 223 (+7), 10 strokes back of first-place.
Senior Chris Taylor opened the tournament with an even-par 72 before finishing with a three-round score of 227 (+11) and in a tie for 19th. Junior Joel Smith edged Taylor by a stroke to finish in a tie for 17th.
Northern Kentucky University captured the team title after shooting 287 and 294 in the second and third rounds, respectively, to make up a 12-stroke first-round deficit. NKU's Danny Lewis was the tournament medalist after finishing with a three-under 213 (72-72-69).
USI will have to await word whether it has qualified for the NCAA II Midwest/South Central Super-Regional Tournament, which is May 3-5 in Duncan, Oklahoma.
