EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team racked up a combined 13 hits 12 runs as it swept Maryville University, 5-1 and 7-0, in a GLVC doubleheader Sunday at the USI Softball Field.

Junior second baseman Amanda Brendel went 2-for-2 at the plate with a home run, a double, and four RBIs in the first game to give sophomore pitcher Hadley Clark more than enough support to earn her second straight win. Clark (2-3) gave up just one run off four hits in a complete-game effort.

Brendel's two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning put the Screaming Eagles up 2-0, while her two-run double in the fifth inning gave the Eagles a 4-1 advantage. Junior centerfielder Reva LeDune-Bourgasser drove in Brendel four batters later as USI cruised to its third straight win.

In game two, the Eagles took advantage of a hit batsman and a double by junior first baseman Brittany DeWeese to put runners on second and third base with no outs in the bottom of the second inning. Junior third baseman LeAnn Collins drove in the first run, while DeWeese scored on a wild pitch in the next at bat to give USI a 2-0 advantage.

DeWeese, who has hit safely in six straight games, hit a two-run shot in the fourth inning to give the Eagles a 4-0 cushion; then pushed in two more runs in the sixth inning when her ground ball snuck under the glove of Maryville shortstop Brittany Ponder.

USI (4-6, 4-0 GLVC) took advantage of two Maryville errors in the sixth inning to plate three runs and build a comfortable 7-0 lead.

Junior hurler Dawn McClellan needed just one run, though, as she held the Saints off the board to pick up her first shutout of the season. McClellan (2-3), who had a save and a win in USI's doubleheader sweep over Missouri University of Science & Technology Saturday, scattered four hits and three walks throughout seven innings to pick up the win over the Saints on Sunday.

The Eagles head south to begin the Division II Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Florida. USI takes on Wheeling Jesuit University and Urbana University Tuesday at noon and 4 p.m. (CST), respectively.
