EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Junior first baseman Brittany DeWeese went a combined 5-of-7 from the plate with a pair of doubles and three RBIs to lead the University of Southern Indiana softball team to a doubleheader sweep over Missouri University of Science & Technology Saturday afternoon at the USI Softball Field. USI won the first game 8-7 and the second game 5-4.
DeWeese got the Screaming Eagles on the board early in the first game as she had a two-run single in the bottom of the first inning to give USI a 2-0 lead.
The Miners (2-4, 0-2 GLVC) answered with a pair of runs in the top half of the third inning to tie the contest, but USI came back with a six-spot in the sixth inning to take an 8-2 lead.
USI (2-6, 2-0 GLVC) began the inning with three-straight hits, including a run-scoring double off the bat of junior centerfielder Reva LeDune-Bourgasser. Freshman rightfielder Katherine Belsito followed with a two-run single to give the Eagles a 5-2 advantage.
Junior second baseman Amanda Brendel had what turned out to be a crucial three-run home run two batters later to stake USI to the six run lead.
Missouri S&T rallied with five runs in the top half of the seventh frame, but junior hurler Dawn McClellan came in to retire a pair of Missouri S&T batters and strand the tying run on third base to preserve the 8-7 victory.
Sophomore pitcher Hadley Clark picked up the victory after going 6.1 innings, giving up seven runs, six earned, off 12 hits. McClellan was credited with the save.
In game two, USI rallied from deficits of 2-0 and 4-2 to set up a walk-off single by DeWeese in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Senior designated player Sara Loete hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the 2-0 deficit in half. DeWeese followed with a two-out double, while sophomore third baseman Kristen O'Haver tied the contest with a single in the next at bat.
USI staged another two-out rally in the sixth inning as LeDune-Bourgasser came through with an RBI-single to cut the Eagles' 4-2 deficit in half. DeWeese, who reached on a double earlier in the inning, came around to tie the contest at 4-4 when freshman shortstop Stephanie Bittner hit a ball that went under the glove of Missouri S&T third baseman Maggie Schroeder and into the outfield.
The Eagles capitalized on a lead-off walk in the seventh frame, but were down to their last out when DeWeese stepped up and drove a ball into the right-centerfield gap that just missed the diving glove of Missouri S&T centerfielder Kate Runyan.
McClellan (1-3) earned the victory after giving up four runs off four hits in seven innings of work.
USI returns to action Sunday when it hosts Maryville University in a GLVC doubleheader. First pitch is slated for noon at the USI Softball Field.
