EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team opens its home schedule Saturday when it begins GLVC play by hosting Missouri University of Science & Technology in a noon doubleheader at the USI Softball Field. The Screaming Eagles also host Maryville University Sunday at noon in a GLVC doubleheader.
USI (0-6, 0-0 GLVC) is looking for its first win after a tough trip to the University of Alabama-Huntsville Charger Chillout two weeks ago. The Eagles were idle last weekend after their scheduled trip to the Tusculum College Classic in Greenville, Tennessee, was cancelled due to snow. The Eagles' trip to IUPU-Indianapolis on Tuesday also was postponed due to field conditions.
Sophomore infielder Kristen O'Haver led the Eagles with a .429 batting average and a home run in seven trips to the plate during the Eagles' opening weekend. Junior first baseman Brittany DeWeese had a home run and a team-high four RBIs.
The Eagles' pitching staff showed promise in their first four games after holding the opposition to a .204 batting average and a 1.56 ERA, but the last two games saw the Eagles give up a combined 21 runs off 23 hits.
Missouri S&T (2-2, 0-0 GLVC) enters this weekend's games having won two of its four games, while Maryville (4-7, 0-0 GLVC) has won four of its last five games after going 0-6 at the Charger Chillout to open the season.
Following Sunday's doubleheader with Maryville, the Eagles will head to Kissimmee, Florida, to compete in the Division II Rebel Spring Games.
