EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Junior centerfielder Reva LeDune-Bourgasser atoned for a late base-running mistake by pushing in the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning of game two to give the University of Southern Indiana softball team a doubleheader split with the University of Indianapolis Friday afternoon at the USI Softball Field.
USI (8-12, 7-1 GLVC), which fell to Indianapolis 7-4 in game one before rallying for a 2-1 triumph in game two, took advantage of a pair of Greyhound errors in the eighth inning to put runners at the corners with nobody out.
LeDune-Bourgasser hit a slow roller to the second base in the ensuing at-bat as USI pinch-runner Lindsay Raikes scored from third base to win the game for the Screaming Eagles.
The Eagles trailed 1-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning and had yet to get a hit off UIndy freshman hurler Jennifer DeMotte. USI, however, tagged the reigning GLVC Pitcher of the Week for three hits in the sixth inning, including a game-tying single off the bat of senior designated player Sara Loete.
USI had a chance to take the lead in the inning, but a pair of offensive miscues by the Eagles kept the contest in a 1-1 stalemate.
Junior pitcher Dawn McClellan stood strong in the pitching circle as she retired the last eight Greyhound batters she faced to keep UIndy off the scoreboard for the final five innings. McClellan (4-6) picked up her fourth win of the season after striking out eight batters and scattering five hits throughout eight innings.
In game one, the Greyhounds (18-9, 10-2 GLVC) scored five times in the top of the seventh inning to overcome a 4-2 deficit and pick up the 7-4 win. Indianapolis racked up five hits in the inning, which started with back-to-back walks.
Earlier in the contest, it was the Eagles who rallied from a 2-0 deficit. Junior third baseman LeAnn Collins hit a three-run bomb in the bottom of the fourth inning to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead; then junior second baseman Amanda Brendel hit a solo shot over the leftfield fence in the sixth inning to give the Eagles a commanding two-run advantage.
Sophomore pitcher Hadley Clark retired the first nine batters she faced before giving up two runs in the fourth inning. Clark (4-6), who struck out seven batters, surrendered just four hits throughout the first six innings before getting tagged for five runs in the seventh frame.
USI returns to action Saturday when it hosts defending GLVC Tournament champion Northern Kentucky University at the USI Softball Field. The doubleheader is set to start at noon.
