LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team used a five-run third inning in game one and a five-run fifth inning in game two to sweep Bellarmine University, 5-2 and 5-1, Friday in a GLVC doubleheader.
USI (7-11, 6-0 GLVC) opened the top half of the third inning of game one by getting its first three batters on base. The Screaming Eagles got a successful suicide squeeze from senior catcher Tara McConnell two batters later to take a 1-0 lead; then got a three-run triple from junior second baseman Amanda Brendel in the next at-bat to go up 4-0.
Senior designated player Sara Loete ended the scoring with an RBI-single in the following at-bat.
Sophomore pitcher Hadley Clark took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before giving up a pair of unearned runs off three hits in the final two innings. Clark (4-5) struck out seven batters to pick up the victory.
In game two, the Eagles had four hits and took advantage of a two-out error to score five times in the fifth inning. Junior centerfielder Reva LeDune-Bourgasser had a one-out, run-scoring single to give USI a 1-0 lead.
Junior first baseman Brittany DeWeese hit a two-out grand slam over the left-centerfield fence three batters later to give junior hurler Dawn McClellan a commanding 5-0 advantage.
McClellan (3-6) earned the win, giving up just one run off eight hits in seven innings of work.
The Eagles return to the USI Softball Field March 27 when they host defending GLVC Tournament champion Northern Kentucky University in a noon doubleheader.
