KISSIMMEE, Fla.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team went 1-1 in the first day of the Division II Rebel Spring Games Tuesday. The Screaming Eagles defeated Wheeling Jesuit University, 5-4, in eight innings before falling to Urbana University, 4-3.

USI got RBI singles from junior first baseman Brittany DeWeese and sophomore third baseman Kristen O'Haver in the top of the eighth inning to take a 5-3 lead over Wheeling Jesuit.

Junior leftfielder Heather Swarts went deep in the fifth inning for her first home run of the season, while junior centerfielder Reva LeDune-Bourgasser and senior designated player Sara Loete each had run-scoring doubles.

Sophomore hurler Hadley Clark held on for her third straight win as she allowed four runs, three earned, off eight hits in eight innings of work. Clark (3-3) struck out five batters in the win.

LeDune-Bourgasser put the Eagles up 2-0 against Urbana in the bottom of the second inning with a home run over the leftfield fence. Urbana, however, scored a pair of runs in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth frame to take a 4-2 lead.

The Eagles (5-7) took advantage of an error in the seventh frame to cut the two-run deficit in half, but failed to push across the tying run despite having runners at first and second with just one out.

Junior pitcher Dawn McClellan took the loss for the Eagles after giving up four runs, just one earned, off seven hits in 5.1 innings of work.

The Eagles return to action Wednesday when they take on Concordia University-St. Paul at 2 p.m. (CST) and Midwest Region foe Saginaw Valley State University at 4 p.m.
