DECATUR, Ala.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team got strong outings from junior pitcher Dawn McClellan and sophomore hurler Hadley Clark Saturday, but the Screaming Eagles' struggled to come up with clutch hits as USI lost to Delta State University and No. 20 Wayne State University by matching scores of 1-0 at the University of Alabama-Huntsville Charger Chillout.
McClellan (0-2) started the day by scattering one run and six hits throughout seven innings of work in USI's game against Delta State. The Lady Statesmen (6-1), however, strung together three straight one-out hits in the top of the second inning before getting an RBI-ground out to push across the only run of the contest.
The Eagles had five hits against Delta State, including a pair by freshman outfielder Katherine Belsito, but left seven runners on base including three in the fifth inning.
Belsito got things going early for USI in its contest against Wayne State as she hit a lead-off double into the left-centerfield gap in the top of the first inning. USI, which left five runners on base against the Warriors, failed to capitalize on the lead-off hit as Belsito was left standing on third base when the inning came to a close.
Wayne State (3-0) also got a double from its leadoff hitter, Alison Allen, in the bottom half of the first frame. Allen came around to score on the next at-bat as Clark (0-2) overthrew a bunted ball to first base, allowing the Warrior's leadoff hitter to round third base and cross the plate.
The error would prove costly as Clark turned a double play in the next at-bat before getting the third out of the inning on a line-out. She held the Warriors to just one base runner throughout the final five innings of the contest and finished the game by allowing just one unearned run off two hits.
USI closes out the Charger Chillout Sunday when it clashes with NCAA II Midwest Region foe Ferris State (11 a.m.) and the University of West Alabama (1 p.m.).
