USI loses heartbreaker in overtime

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team lost a heartbreaker in overtime to Bellarmine University, 3-2, Friday evening at Strassweg Field. USI falls to 8-8-0 overall and 5-8-0 in the GLVC, while Bellarmine goes to 9-4-2, 7-4-2 GLVC.
Bellarime scored the game winner 5:19 into the “sudden victory” overtime off the foot of forward Bradley Barraclough. The goal thwarted USI comeback attempt from a two goal deficit.

The Knights had jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first half with goals at 10:44 and 11:08. The score would remain 2-0 through the intermission.

In the second half, the Eagles started their comeback by cutting the Knights' lead in half with a goal at 57:45. Freshman forward Andrew Rosenberg (New Albany, Indiana) put USI on the scoreboard with his fourth goal of the year off a pass from senior midfielder Michael Simcock (England).

The Eagles knotted the game at 2-2 when freshman defender Nico DiPinto (South Bend, Indiana) headed in a corner kick from Simcock at 75:00. The goal was DiPinto's first as an Eagle.

USI had missed a chance to get on the scoreboard earlier in the second half when senior midfielder Chris Rutter (England) hit the crossbar at 51:47.

With 3:19 to play in regulation, Simcock was red carded for a flagrant foul that caused USI to play the remainder of the second half and overtime with 10 men.

The Eagles conclude the 2010 campaign Sunday at noon when they host Kentucky Wesleyan College. The Panthers, who were off Friday, are 2-12-1 overall and 0-12-1 in the GLVC.
