Volleyball hosts Oakland City Tuesday

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team returns to the Physical Activities Center Tuesday at 7 p.m. when it hosts Oakland City University in a Midwest Region match.

Tuesday's match is the first of four non-conference regional contests the Screaming Eagles will play this week as they compete at the Mizuno GLVC/GLIAC Crossover in Aurora, Illinois, Friday and Saturday.

The GLVC/GLIAC Crossover is the largest collegiate volleyball tournament in the country, featuring 30 teams in 45 matches on eight courts in a two-day span. The 30-team field is highlighted by 15 schools from the Great Lakes Valley Conference as well as 14 from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

USI (10-7, 5-3 GLVC), which saw its four-match GLVC winning streak come to a close Saturday against No. 20 University of Indianapolis, begins the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Friday at 11:30 a.m. when it faces No. 12 Hillsdale College. The Eagles also play Wayne State University Friday at 5:30 p.m. and Ashland University Saturday at 1 p.m.

First, the Eagles must get past an Oakland City squad that enters the PAC with a 7-6 record. The Eagles are 18-0 since 1989 against Oakland City after sweeping the Lady Oaks in Oakland City, Indiana, a year ago.

Hillsdale (15-1, 12-0 GLIAC) is the top team in the GLIAC and is 5-3 since 1989 against the Eagles after sweeping last year's meeting in Findlay, Ohio. The Chargers have won the last two meetings in the series.

Wayne State (9-7, 7-5 GLIAC) is currently fifth overall in the GLIAC standings and won its first meeting with USI, 3-0, last season. The Warriors have won six of their last nine matches after opening the year with a 3-4 mark.

USI and Ashland (11-6, 6-5 GLIAC) meet for the first time since 2006 and just the fourth time since it left the GLVC in 1995. Ashland, which is seventh overall in the GLIAC standings, leads the series, 7-4, since 1989 despite losing the last three meetings, including a four-set loss in the most recent meeting (2006).
