EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team had a couple of strong opportunities to put goals on the scoreboard, but none of them panned out as the Screaming Eagles fell to Quincy University, 2-0, Sunday at Strassweg Field.
USI (5-4-2, 4-2-1 GLVC) nearly scored in the opening period when freshman forward Susan Ellsperman hit the cross-bar on a free kick in the 36th minute of the contest. The Eagles had two shots in the box within a five-second span in the 65th minute that would have tied the contest, but both offerings were blocked by the Quincy defense to preserve what at the time was a 1-0 Hawks' advantage.
Quincy (7-3-0, 5-1-0 GLVC) opened the scoring in the 20th minute of the match when Brittany Casey used a pass from Meghan Roberts to put the ball in the back of the net. The Hawks' Megan Schwermer used a pass from Erin Thomas in the 71st minute to extend Quincy's lead to 2-0.
The Hawks, who took 22 shots and had seven attempts on goal, held the Eagles to season-low tying 10 shots, four of which were on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Bodamer led the Eagles' defense with five saves, while Ellsperman and freshman midfielder Paige Nuelle each had a pair of shots to lead the Eagles offensively.
USI returns to action Friday when they travel to Kansas City, Missouri, to take on Rockhurst University. Kick-off is slated for 5 p.m.
