Men's golf starts year with 14th at region tournament

SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. -- The University of Southern Indiana men golf team finished tied for 14th at the first Great Lakes Region Invitational of the 2009-10. The invitational also was the season opener for the Screaming Eagles.

The Screaming Eagles posted a 611 as a team (303-308), 38 strokes off the pace set by Wayne State University. The Warriors had a two-round 573 (291-282), including the top round of 282 in the final day.

USI was led by senior Matt Hancock and junior Joel Smith, who tied for 53rd with identical 151tournaments. Each player had a 74 in the first round and 77 in the final round.

The Eagles resume action October 4-5 at the University of Illinois-Springfield Invitational at The Rail Golf Course.
