QUINCY, Ill. – The 22nd-ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team still needs a win to clinch the GLVC West Division after losing both ends of a doubleheader at Quincy University Saturday afternoon. Quincy took game one, 5-4, in 10 innings, and the nightcap, 6-5.
USI falls to 34-14 overall, 19-6 GLVC, and 12-6 West Division, while Quincy goes to 28-22, 17-8 GLVC, and 9-8 West Division. The Screaming Eagles, despite having the best conference record in the GLVC, still needs at least a split on Sunday against the Hawks to clinch the GLVC West Division. The first pitch Sunday is scheduled for noon.
In both wins, the Hawk got to the NCAA Division II's top reliever to defeat the Eagles. USI senior right-handed closerÂ
Shaun Larsen (Tell City, Indiana) allowed a run in the bottom of the 10th of game one on a RBI single and a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to take both losses. Larsen falls to 5-4 in 2009.
USI jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in game one, only to see Quincy fight back and take a 4-3 lead. The Eagles rallied with a run in the top of the ninth to send the game into extra innings, only to see the Hawks push a run across the plate in the bottom of the 10th to get the win.
In the night cap, it was the Hawks who flew out to a 3-1 lead after one inning. Quincy increased the led to 4-1 with a tally before USI tried to comeback to get the victory. The Eagles grabbed a 5-4 lead with four runs in the top of the sixth inning. This set the scene for the bottom of the seventh and the two-run blast to give Quincy its second win of the day.
At the plate, USI was led during the two games by freshman second basemanÂ
Brad Vance (Louisville, Kentucky), who was four-for-seven with three RBIs, and sophomore catcherÂ
Dylan Mooney (St. Charles, Missouri), who was five-for-nine with three runs scored.
