INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.—University of Southern Indiana women's track and field junior All-American
Mary Ballinger (Chesterton, Indiana) completed a historic 10-day stretch Saturday night as she won the 1,500 meters at the Stan Lyons Open to lead the Screaming Eagles.
Ten days after posting the nation's top time and shattering the school-record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Ballinger returned to the track to post an NCAA II automatic qualifying time of four minutes, 29.83 seconds in the 1,500 meters Saturday night. Earlier this week, Ballinger was named the Integra Bank/USI Female Student-Athlete of the Year as well as the GLVC Female Track Athlete of the Week.
In addition to Ballinger's first-place finish in the 1,500 meters, junior All-American
Lacy Williams (Haubstadt, Indiana) and freshman
Jackie Henderson (Schererville, Indiana) were second and third, respectively, in the steeplechase.
Senior sprinter
Tom Cunningham (Bridgeport, Illinois) led the men's team with a third-place showing in the 100 meters. Cunningham crossed the finish line in 10.81 seconds, less than a 10th of a second off his school record.
The Eagles return to action May 1-2 when they compete at the GLVC Outdoor Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana.
