EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team completed a doubleheader sweep of Missouri University of Science & Technology Saturday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field with a 9-2 victory in the opener and a 6-3 win in the nightcap. The Screaming Eagles improve their records to 30-11 overall, 17-4 GLVC, and 10-4 West Division, while the Miners fall to 13-27, 7-10 GLVC, and 6-7 West.

USI has reached the 30-win plateau for the third straight season, the first time since the 1992, 1993, and 1994 seasons.

Eagles' junior pitcher/designated hitter Tyler Choate (Carmi, Illinois) did it all for USI in the 9-2, game-one win. Choate (7-2) posted his seventh win of the year on the mound by scattering seven hits and allowing two runs in six innings of work. He also struck out seven before giving way to sophomore right-hander Trevor Leach (Danville, Indiana) and freshman Shad Macke (Evansville, Indiana) in the final three innings.

At the plate, Choate helped himself by going three-for-three with two runs scored and a triple.

The Eagles also had three two-hit performers in the 15-hit game-one attack. Junior shortstop Wes Fink (Clarksville, Tennessee) and senior outfielder Chad Werry (New Harmony, Indiana) had a pair of hits and two RBIs each, while senior third baseman Alex Thieroff (Greenfield, Indiana) had two hits and one RBI.

In the nightcap, Leach tied a USI single-season record with his eighth win of the year after relieving junior right-handed starter D.J. Smith (Vincennes, Indiana) in the fourth inning. Leach (8-0), who joins 10 other USI pitchers with eight wins in a season, allowed one hit and struck out three in 2.1 innings to get the victory.

USI senior right-hander Shaun Larsen (Tell City, Indiana) moved one step closer to breaking his own single-season record with his 14th save of the year. Larsen, who pitched a perfect seventh to close out the game, set the USI single-season and career mark with 17 saves a year ago.

Offensively in the nightcap, senior first baseman Caleb Ehmke (Waterloo, Indiana) paced the Eagles with three hits. Ehmke had the game-winning blast for the Eagles in the second inning when he hit a two-run home run.

The middle of the USI line-up also came-up big once again for the Eagles with Choate, Thieroff, Werry, and Fink getting two hits each.

The Eagles and the Miners will complete the four-game series when they move the games back to Rolla, Missouri, on Tuesday. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
