EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The 22nd-ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team split a doubleheader with Rockhurst University Sunday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. Rockhurst won the opener, 6-0, while USI took the nightcap, 4-3.
After the four-game series split, the Screaming Eagles are 28-10 overall, 15-4 GLVC, and 8-4 in the GLVC West Division, while the Hawks go to 27-13, 13-7 GLVC, and 11-5 West.
USI won the nightcap by breaking a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the eighth. Junior third baseman 
Tyler Choate (Carmi, Illinois) started the game-winning rally with a lead-off double to right center and advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a RBI-single by junior shortstop 
Wes Fink (Clarksville, Tennessee).
The Eagles took the initial lead for the first time in the series with a run in the first inning. Fink gave USI a 1-0 lead on a RBI single to score sophomore catcher 
Dylan Mooney (St. Charles, Missouri).
The lead was extended to 2-0 on a home run in the third by senior first baseman 
Caleb Ehmke (Waterloo, Indiana) before the Hawks cut the lead in half with a tally in the fourth and took the lead with a pair of runs in the fifth.
USI tied game 3-3 on a home run by Choate in the bottom of the fifth. The score would remain deadlocked until the Eagle pushed the winning run across in the eighth.
On mound, senior right-hander 
Shaun Larsen (Tell City, Indiana) got the win in his longest outing of the season. Larsen (4-2) allowed just two hits and struck out four in 4.1 innings of work to get his fourth win of the season.
Proceeding Larsen to the mound was senior right-hander 
Michael Dewig (Haubstadt, Indiana), who went the first three-plus innings, and sophomore right-hander 
Trevor Leach (Danville, Indiana), who went 1.2 innings in relief.
The Eagles were shutout for the first this season in the opener, 6-0. USI was held to just two hits, both by senior rightfielder 
Chad Werry (New Harmony, Indiana) with a double in the second inning and a single in the fourth.
On the mound, senior right-hander 
Alex Thieroff (Greenfield, Indiana) lasted 2.1 innings, allowing four second-inning runs on three hits and four walks. Junior right-hander 
Cody Brandenstein (Evansville, Indiana) followed Thieroff (2-1) and allowed a run in 2.2 frames, while freshman right-hander 
Shad Macke (Evansville, Indiana) allowed a run in the final two innings.
USI goes on the road next week when its plays in the "Battle at the Braun" Wednesday against the University of Evansville and plays a four-game GLVC West series April 18-19 at Missouri University of Science & Technology.
