EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana baseball team scored 10 times in the bottom of the seventh innings en route to a 16-2 rout of No. 24 Wayne State University in the final game of the Dunn Hospitality Invitational Saturday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field.
USI (8-5), which extended its winning streak to five games, jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on the strength of senior third basemanÂ
Alex Thieroff's (Greenfield, Indiana) two-run triple in the first inning. The Screaming Eagles tacked on two more tallies in the fifth inning and another in the sixth frame to take a 6-0 lead.
In the seventh frame, the Eagles sent 15 batters to the plate as they blew the contest wide open. Senior outfielderÂ
Chad Werry (New Harmony, Indiana) went 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and a team-best four RBIs, while junior pitcher/infielderÂ
Tyler Choate (Carmi, Illinois) went 3-of-4 at the dish with a double and three RBIs.
Choate (2-1) picked up the victory after allowing just three hits and a walk in seven innings of work. Choate, who had four strikeouts, retired the first 12 batters he faced before allowing his first hit.
USI travels to Russellville, Arkansas, Tuesday for a two-game series with Arkansas Tech University. First pitch Tuesday is slated for 5 p.m., while first pitch Wednesday is scheduled for 3 p.m.
