USI holds on to win 10-7

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team put up 10 runs in five innings to defeat Arkansas Tech University, 10-7, Tuesday afternoon in the Russellville, Arkansas. USI has won six in a row and raises its record to 9-5 overall, while ATU slipped to 11-15.

The Screaming Eagles took the lead in the first inning for the third game in a row, scoring three runs to start the game. USI took a 2-0 lead on RBI singles by junior shortstop Wes Fink (Clarksville, Tennessee) and senior rightfielder Chad Werry (New Harmony, Indiana) before freshman leftfielder Chase Holzmeyer (Haubstadt, Indiana) finished the scoring with an RBI ground out.

Fink and Holzmeyer continued USI's offensive assault by driving four more runs in the third and fourth innings. Fink hit a two-run home run in the third to make the score 5-0, while Holzmeyer upped the lead to 7-0 with RBI singles in the third and fourth.

After ATU cut the lead to 7-1, the Eagles responded to with three more tallies in the fifth. USI junior first baseman Tyler Choate (Carmi, Illinois) hit a two-run home run to give the Eagles an eight run lead before Werry finished the scoring for the Eagles with an RBI single to extend the lead to 10-1.

The Wonder Boys tried to climb back into the game with six runs in the final three innings. USI senior right-handed closer Shaun Larsen (Tell City, Indiana) saved the game for the Eagles by getting the final out and the 10-7 win. The save was the fourth of the year for Larsen.

USI senior right-hander Matt Nichols (Newburgh, Indiana) went the first five innings to get the victory. Nichols (2-1) scattered five hits and one run, while striking out five.

The Eagles conclude the short two-game series with the Wonder Boys Wednesday at 2 p.m. before returning to the friendly surroundings of the USI Baseball Field to open the GLVC schedule against the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. USI and UW-Parkside will play a four-game series Saturday and Sunday with the first pitch at noon each day.
