Eagles drop twinbill to UW-Parkside

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team lost both games of a GLVC doubleheader to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, 8-4 and 7-2, Monday at the USI Softball Field.

Sophomore infielder/pitcher Amanda Brendel (Salem, Illinois) led the Screaming Eagles, going a combined 4-of-6 at the plate with a double, home run, and three RBIs in the two games.

Brendel, who made her USI pitching debut in a relief effort in the second game, provided the Eagles' offense with her two-out, two-run long ball in the bottom of the fifth inning of game two. She was 2-of-3 in game one with a double, run scored, and an RBI.

Senior shortstop Ally McKinley (Sullivan, Indiana) also inched closer to recording her 100th career RBI as she went 2-for-4 with a double and a pair of RBIs in game one. She now has 99 RBIs in her four-year career at USI, good for fifth on the school's all-time list.

In game one, USI (8-24, 0-6 GLVC) led 2-1 after junior designated player Sara Loete (Pekin, Illinois) and McKinley posted RBI singles in the bottom of the first inning.

UW-Parkside (13-13, 7-5 GLVC), however, took advantage of an error to tie the score in the top of the third frame; then took the lead with a tally in the fourth inning. The Rangers plated five runs in the sixth inning to take an 8-2 edge.

Brendel and McKinley recorded RBI doubles in the sixth and seventh frames, respectively, but the Eagles could not get any closer as they fell in the opening contest, 8-4.

Freshman pitcher Hadley Clark (Owensboro, Kentucky) took the loss for the Eagles after giving up eight runs, seven earned, off 10 hits in 5.2 innings of work. Clark falls to 2-3 with the decision.

The Eagles surrendered a pair of runs in the top of the second inning of game two to fall into an early deficit. UW-Parkside extended its lead to 5-0 with a three-spot in the third frame and took a commanding 7-0 advantage with two more runs in the fifth inning before Brendel got the Eagles' on the board with her two-run home run.

Sophomore pitcher Dawn McClellan (Valparaiso, Indiana) was charged with the setback after allowing five runs, four earned, off six hits in 2.2 innings of work. McClellan falls to 2-9 with the loss.

USI returns to action Saturday when it visits Northern Kentucky University for a GLVC doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. (CDT). The Eagles conclude the week with a stop in Louisville, Kentucky, to take on Bellarmine University for another conference twinbill beginning at 11 a.m. Sunday.
