Eagles drop both sets of twinbill to Miners

ROLLA, Mo.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team dropped both sets of a GLVC doubleheader to Missouri University of Science and Technology Sunday, losing game one 5-1 and game two 7-1.

In game one, Missouri S&T (8-13, 3-5 GLVC) struck first as it took advantage of a lead-off single by senior centerfielder Emily Tucker to put up a tally in the bottom of the first inning. The Miners took advantage of consecutive walks to lead off the bottom of the fifth frame and plate four runs to extend their advantage to 5-0.

USI (8-22, 0-4 GLVC), which struggled in key situations, scored on an error in the sixth inning, but could get no closer as Missouri S&T's senior hurler Jen O'Hara set the Eagles down in order in the seventh frame to pick up the victory.

As a team, the Screaming Eagles stranded 12 runners on base and left the bases loaded three times. Sophomore pitcher Dawn McClellan (Valparaiso, Indiana) took the loss despite giving up just two hits. McClellan (2-8), who was charged with three of the five runs before giving way in the fourth inning, struggled with her control as she issued six walks.

After giving up another run in the bottom of the first inning of game two, USI junior outfielder Lindsay Raikes (Speedway, Indiana) singled in a run in the top part of the fourth frame to tie the score at 1-1.

The Miners, though, got a solo home run from Tucker in the fifth inning to take a 2-1 lead, then got a grand slam from Tucker, who was 3-for-3 in the game, in the sixth inning to blow the contest wide open.

Senior pitcher Stephanie Schneider (Birdseye, Indiana) was tagged with the loss after giving up seven runs off nine hits in 5.2 innings of work. She falls to 3-11 with the decision.

The Eagles return to action next weekend when they host the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Saturday and Lewis University Sunday. Both GLVC doubleheaders are slated for noon starts at the USI Softball Field.
