Box Score: Southern Indiana 3, Indianapolis 2 (10 innings)

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team won its 11th straight game in dramatic fashion Wednesday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field, defeating the University of Indianapolis, 3-2, in 10 innings. USI raises its overall record to 14-5 after the non-conference contest, while UIndy falls to 13-8.

The Screaming Eagles are one victory short of tying the program's longest winning streak of 12 set during the 1992 and 1993 seasons.

USI junior shortstop Wes Fink (Clarksville, Tennessee) led the way for the Eagles by scoring the winning run in the top of the 10th on a RBI single by senior rightfielder Chad Werry (New Harmony, Indiana). Fink would finish the game with a three hits in four at-bats with two runs scored, a double, and a triple.

After the Eagles had spotted the Greyhounds a 2-0 lead in the third innings, Fink started the USI comeback in the sixth inning when he doubled and scored on an RBI single by senior third baseman Alex Thieroff (Greenfield, Indiana) to cut the lead to 2-1.

USI set the stage for the dramatic 10th inning when it tied the score, 2-2, in the bottom half of the ninth inning. Senior designated hitter/leftfielder Caleb Ehmke (Waterloo, Indiana) broke a 0-for-6 slump with a clutch RBI-single to drive in senior centerfielder Royle Beach (Aurora, Colorado) to knot the score up at 2-2.

On the mound, USI senior right-hander Shaun Larsen (Tell City, Indiana) pitched two shutout innings to get the win in relief. Larsen (3-2) set down six straight batters, striking out one.

Senior right-hander Michael Dewig (Haubstadt, Indiana), who was making his first collegiate start in 51 appearances for the Eagles, earned a no-decision despite working six strong innings. Dewig allowed six hits, two runs and two walks, while striking out three in his first start on the mound.

USI sophomore right-hander Cody Brandenstein (Evansville, Indiana) and junior right-hander Trevor Leach (Danville, Indiana) bridge the gap between Dewig and Larsen with two shutout innings. Brandenstein pitched 1.2 innings, allowing a hit and striking out one, while Leach pitched a third of an inning to get the Eagles out of a second and third, two-out jam in the eighth.

The Eagles complete the nine-game homestand at the USI Baseball Field this weekend when they host Drury University for a four-game series. The series starts with a 2 p.m. single game Friday, followed by a noon doubleheader Saturday and a noon single game Sunday.
