SAVANNAH, Ga. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team lost a 2-1 decision in 10 innings at Armstrong Atlantic State University Saturday afternoon in Savannah, Georgia. USI goes to 0-2 to start the season, while AASU raises its record to 3-2.
The Screaming Eagles drew first blood in the sixth inning when senior leftfielderÂ
Chad Werry (New Harmony, Indiana) scored on a bases-loaded two-out walk of junior pinch hitterÂ
Kyle Rowley (Indianapolis, Indiana). Werry started the rally with a two-out double and advanced to third when senior rightfielderÂ
Chad Bruce (Fountaintown, Indiana) reached on a fielding error.
The Pirates had loaded the bases by walking sophomore catcherÂ
Dylan Mooney (St. Charles, Missouri) to set the stage for Rowley.
AASU tied the game in the bottom of the eighth off of senior right-handed closerÂ
Shaun Larsen (Tell City, Indiana). AASU rightfielder Alex Wyche doubled and scored on a single by first baseman Kenny Cail to tie the score, 1-1.
In the 10th, AASU leftfielder Josh Heath scored on an RBI single by shortstop Juan Dorado. Heath had reached and advanced to second on a throwing error by USI shortstopÂ
Wes Fink (Clarksville, Tennessee) to start the 10th. He then advanced to third on a single by centerfielder Josh Wilson before the single by Dorado.
Larsen took the loss for USI in relief and goes to 0-1. He went two-plus innings, allowing five hits, two runs, one earned run, and struck out two.
USI senior right-handerÂ
Matt Nichols (Newburgh, Indiana) started and got the no-decision, pitching a near perfect seven innings. He allowed no runs and just two hits, while striking out three.
The Eagles and the Pirates conclude their three-game series Sunday at 10 a.m. (CST). USI will be idle during following the series until it travels to Southern Arkansas University on February 21-22 for a pair of games against the Muleriders and a neutral-site contest against Northwest Missouri State University.
