Eagles win first game of the year with comeback effort

Box Score: Southern Indiana 8, Armstrong Atlantic State 7 (10 innings)

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team came back from a four-run deficit to win its first game of the year, 8-7, in 10 innings at Armstrong Atlantic State University Sunday morning in Savannah, Georgia. USI raises its record to 1-2, while AASU falls back to .500 at 3-3.

The Screaming Eagles completed the comeback win in the top of the 10th when senior centerfielder Royle Beach (Aurora, Colorado) scored on a base hit by senior rightfielder Chad Bruce (Fountaintown, Indiana). Beach had started the 10th with a pinch hit single, advanced to second on a sacrifice by sophomore catcher Dylan Mooney (St. Charles, Missouri), and stole third base.

USI senior right-hander Shaun Larsen (Tell City, Indiana) nailed down the victory for the Eagles by closing out the 10th to post his first win of the year. Larsen (1-1), who got USI out of a bases loaded jam in the ninth, went 1.1 innings to get the win, allowed a walk, and struck out two.

The Pirates jumped out in front early with two runs in the first before the Eagles could get on the scoreboard with a tally in the third. AASU extended the lead to 3-1 only to see USI cut the lead in half again on a home run by junior shortstop Wes Fink (Clarksville, Tennessee).

AASU increased its lead to 5-2 and 7-3 with a pair of two run rallies in the fourth and sixth innings.

In the seventh, USI cut the AASU lead in half on a RBI-double by junior designated hitter Tyler Choate (Carmi, Illinois) and a RBI-single by Fink. The Eagles tied the score in the eighth when senior first baseman Caleb Ehmke (Waterloo, Indiana) scored on a wild pitch and senior leftfielder Chad Werry crossed the plate on a pass ball.

Offensively, Fink led the way for the Eagles with three hits with a home run and two RBIs. Choate also had a pair of doubles and a pair of RBIs in the victory.

USI will be idle during following the series until it travels to Southern Arkansas University on February 21-22 for a pair of games against the Muleriders and a neutral-site contest against Northwest Missouri State University.
