CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana men's track and field team racked up 76 points to finish fourth at the GLVC Indoor Championships this weekend.
Junior
Matthew Zielske (Elkhart, Indiana) and freshman
Dustin Emerick (Elmwood, Illinois) each recorded first-place finishes to lead the Screaming Eagles.
Emerick won the 5,000 meters with a time of 15 minutes, 2.38 seconds Saturday afternoon before returning to place third in the 3,000 meters with a time of eight minutes, 54.41 seconds later in the evening.
Emerick was named the GLVC Freshman of the Year for his efforts, marking the second time this academic year that he has earned such an honor—he was the GLVC Freshman of the Year in cross country as well.
Zielske placed first in the mile with a time of four minutes, 22.72 seconds, marking his first-ever victory at the collegiate level.
In all, the Eagles had 12 top-five performances, with senior
Tom Cunningham (Bridgeport, Illinois) accounting for three of those finishes. Cunningham was second in the 55 meters, fourth in the 200 meters, and ran the anchor for USI's 4x400-meter relay team, which finished fifth.
Junior
Brandon Campbell (Portage, Indiana) finished second in the 3,000 and third in the 5,000 meters, while senior
Bryan Phillips (Kokomo, Indiana) was fourth in the 3,000 meters and fifth in the 5,000 meters.
