Eagles get win over NWMS, but fall to #4 SAU

Box Score: Southern Indiana 10, Northwest Missouri State 2
Box Score: #4 Southern Arkansas 5, Southern Indiana 1

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team went 1-1 Saturday defeating Northwest Missouri State University, 10-2, and losing to fourth-ranked Southern Arkansas University, 5-1, in Magnolia, Arkansas. USI's record goes to 2-3 in the young campaign.

In the 10-2 neutral site victory over NWMS, USI junior right-hander Tyler Choate (Carmi, Illinois) got his first victory as an Eagle. Choate threw a nine-inning complete game, allowing five hits and two earned runs. He also struck out nine batters.

Offensively, USI's senior third baseman Alex Thieroff (Greenfield, Indiana), senior first baseman Caleb Ehmke (Waterloo, Indiana), and sophomore catcher Dylan Mooney (St. Charles, Missouri) each hit home runs to spark the Eagle attack. Ehmke had the big bomb, a two-run shot in the seventh inning.

USI senior centerfielder Royle Beach (Aurora, Colorado) also drove in two runs in the victory.

In the nightcap road loss to SAU, the Muleriders scored all the runs they would need with two runs in the first inning and sealed the victory with a single tally in the fourth, fifth, and seventh. Three SAU hurlers limited the Eagles to just five hits and a run in the eighth.

USI will conclude its southern swing Sunday at SAU for a 1 p.m. first pitch. The Eagles open the 2009 home scheduled Wednesday when they host Kentucky Wesleyan College at the USI Baseball Field. Start time Wednesday is scheduled for noon.
