One bad inning hurts USI

Box Score: #4 Southern Arkansas 10, Southern Indiana 7

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team could not hold onto a five-run lead in falling to fourth-ranked Southern Arkansas University, 10-7, Sunday afternoon in Magnolia, Arkansas. USI finishes the road trip 1-2 and falls to 2-4 on the young campaign, while SAU goes to 12-3.

After the Mulerider took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, the Screaming Eagles bounced back with a five-spot in the top of the second. The Eagles sent nine men to the plate in the five-run second, producing six hits and highlighted by an RBI double by senior first baseman Caleb Ehmke (Waterloo, Indiana).

USI extended its lead to five runs with a tally in the fifth and sixth inning. Sophomore catcher Dylan Mooney (St. Charles, Missouri) drove in senior leftfielder Chad Werry (Newburgh, Indiana) with a single in the fifth, while junior shortstop Wes Fink singled in junior rightfielder Brad Mangold (Evansville, Indiana) in the sixth.

Three USI hitters had two hits each, led by Fink who tied a career-high with three RBIs.

SAU erased the five-run USI lead and took the lead in the bottom of the sixth. The Muleriders scored six runs off Eagles' junior right-handed starter D.J. Smith (Vincennes, Indiana) and two relievers. Smith would get a no-decision while senior right-hander Michael Dewig (Haubstadt, Indiana) took the loss in relief.

The Muleriders sealed the victory with a two-run rally in the bottom of the eighth off of Eagles' senior right-hander Shaun Larsen (Tell City, Indiana) to produce the 10-7 final.

The Eagles open the 2009 home schedule at the USI Baseball Field Wednesday when they host Kentucky Wesleyan College for a non-conference doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for noon.
