Tough start continues as Eagles drop two

DECATUR, Ala.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team saw victory slip away once again as it fell to the University of West Alabama, 3-2, in eight innings and to the University of Alabama-Huntsville, 8-1, Friday at the UAH Charger Chillout.

USI (0-8) rallied from a 1-0 deficit to take a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning against West Alabama. Sophomore pitcher/outfielder Dawn McClellan (Valparaiso, Indiana) hit a solo home run in the top of the fifth inning and had an RBI-single in the sixth inning to give the Screaming Eagles a one-run advantage.

The Tigers (6-0), however, rallied with a tally in the bottom of the seventh frame to force extra innings, then took advantage of the international tie-breaker rule in the eighth inning to give the Eagles their seventh consecutive setback.

It marked USI's fourth straight loss in the game's last at-bat and their fifth one-run loss of the 2009 campaign.

Senior pitcher Stephanie Schneider (Birdseye, Indiana) was charged with the setback after giving up three runs, two earned, off five hits in 7.1 innings of work. Schneider (0-3) struck out seven batters but was plagued by seven walks, including a pair in the seventh inning.

Alabama-Huntsville (2-0) scored a run in each of the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead in USI's second game of the day. USI cut the deficit in half when sophomore third baseman Amanda Brendel (Salem, Illinois) singled in a run in the top of the fourth frame, but the Chargers answered with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth frame before tacking on four runs in the sixth inning to run away with the victory.

McClellan (0-5) was charged with the loss after giving up four runs off five hits and five walks in four innings of action.

USI returns to the field Saturday when it takes on Delta State University (10 a.m.) and the University of North Alabama (noon).
