USI begins regular season campaign Saturday

Eagles start 2009-10 with Harris-Stowe State

GAME NOTES

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana tips-off the 2009-10 regular season campaign with a six-game homestand, starting with Harris-Stowe State University Saturday and Tiffin University on Monday. Tip-off for each game is 7:30 p.m.

The Screaming Eagles are coming off a 1-1 exhibition season that featured a last second loss at Southern Illinois University and a 30-point win over Centre College. The Eagles were led during the preseason contests by senior guard Jamar Smith, who averaged 22.0 points per game.

USI senior forward Tyrone Bradshaw and junior forward Nick Duncheon followed Smith in the scoring column with 17.0 and 11.5 points per game, respectively. Bradshaw had a game-high 23 points in the win over Centre, while Duncheon dropped in 21 points on seven three-point field goals at SIU.

USI hopes to continue its string of season-opening wins Saturday, having started the season with a win each of the last 23 years. The Eagles also hope to continue its dominance of non-conference opponents, posting a record of 146-20 (.879) outside of the GLVC since 1992-93.

Harris-Stowe State (2-3), which plays the GLVC's Maryville University Tuesday in St. Louis, is already underway in 2009-10. The Hornets started the year 1-3 before breaking a two-game losing streak on Saturday with a neutral site win over East West University.

USI leads the all-time series with Harris-Stowe State, 3-0, after winning last season's match-up, 103-58.

Tiffin also opens the 2009-10 season this week before coming to play the Eagles next Monday. The Dragons, who were 2-25 last year, start the year at home Tuesday against West Liberty State University.

The Eagles are 4-0 in the all-time series with Tiffin, winning last year at the PAC, 107-58.
