SOMERS, Wis.—Sophomore middle blocker Danielle LaGrange had 17 kills and a .406 attacking percentage to lead the University of Southern Indiana volleyball team to a 15-25, 25-14, 25-20, 14-25, 15-10 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Saturday afternoon.
LaGrange had six of her match-high 17 kills in the fifth set alone as the Screaming Eagles gained a much-needed road victory over the Rangers.
USI (13-13, 5-5 GLVC) turned a one-set deficit into a one-set lead with wins in the second and third games. The Eagles attacked at clips of .286 and .280 in the second and third stanzas, respectively, as they gained the upper hand in the match.
Senior middle blocker Ashley Henricks jump-started the Eagles run when she notched five kills, two blocks, and a .375 attacking percentage in the second set. LaGrange converted three attack attempts into points and had two aces and two blocks in the second game as the Eagles evened the match at 1-1.
USI used a well-balanced attack as well as a 7-2 run to best the Rangers in the third frame. Senior outside hitter Courtney Bealor had three kills, a service ace, and a perfect attacking percentage in the third set to help the Eagles take a one-game advantage.
UW-Parkside (20-9, 4-6 GLVC), however, roared back in the fourth set on the strength of a .850 side-out percentage. The Rangers hit .258 and held the Eagles to a negative .050 attacking percentage to extend the match to a deciding fifth game.
USI, however, saved its best offensive performance for last as it hit .364 in the final set. LaGrange had two quick kills, while junior defensive specialist Janae Curnutt had a service ace to stake USI to a 3-0 advantage. UW-Parkside evened the frame at 9-9, but USI ended the stanza with a 6-1 run to win the set and the match.
In addition to LaGrange, the Eagles got 11 kills and 10 digs from Bealor as well as 10 kills and four blocks from Henricks. Senior setter Melanie Pund had a match-high 43 assists to go with nine digs and a pair of aces, while Curnutt added a team-high 12 digs and two aces.
USI returns to action Friday at 7 p.m. when it hosts the University of Missouri-St. Louis at the Physical Activities Center. The Eagles host Missouri University of Science and Technology for Senior Day October 31 to close out their home schedule.
